Winslow Homer (1836-1910) Painter from the American Naturalist school, considered one of the greatest American artists of the 19th century. In 1857, he was hired by "Harper’s Weekly" as an illustrator. His engravings for the magazine are characterized by skillful maipulation of light and dark, clean outlines, and a stark use of forms. He was immensely influential on the American realist school of painting.
