Historical Background
On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik- an innocuous 183-pound sphere carrying a radio transmitter- into space. Sputnik changed everything -- catalyzing the space race to the moon. Next came this Vostok 3KA-2 space capsule. March 25, 1961, followed by Yuri Gagarin's historic flight 18 days later, on April 12, 1961.
